EducationThe PhD student at the beginning of his/her first year must submit to the School Council of (indicated as "Council" hereafter) an education plan which must include at least two courses with a final exam, chosen within the list of official Graduate courses or, when appropriate, within the list of under-graduate courses in Physics.The Council reserves the right to modify the education plan according to the student background and needs. Regular attendance to the classes is mandatory. The student is supposed to give high priority to classes and exams during the first year. Any research activity that interferes too much with the classes should be postponed to the second and third year. The PdD students must also choose an advisor and a title for a short monographic thesis (“tesina”) within the month of February of the second year. The name of the advisor and the title of the “tesina” should be communicated to the Council for approval. The “tesina”, in a written form must be delivered within July 30th of the second year. ExamsIn order to obtain the degree, the PhD student must pass three exams, two of which within October 31st of the first year (first year courses) and the third within October 31st of the second year (defense of the short thesis). One of the first year exams can be replaced by an oral discussion about the topics of a physics school which the PhD student has attended. This replacement must be approved by the Council in advance.Admission to following yearIn order to be admitted to the following year, at the end of each year the PhD student must write a report about his/her activity, covering both education and research.This report is due by November 30th of each year. The scientific part of the report will be discussed in a short seminar (20 min long) given by the student in front of the Council. All PhD students are supposed to join these sessions as mandatory part as their education program. Thesis title and supervisorsIn the written report at the end of the first year the PhD student should add also the title of the PhD thesis and the name of the internal thesis supervisor, which will be discussed and approved by the Council. Within the end of June of the second year the name of a second external supervisor (i.e. not belonging neither to the Physics Department nor to research institutes that work within the department) should be proposed to the Council for approval. |
